The thyroid is a small gland in the neck measuring about one inch across that lies just under the skin below the Adam’s apple. The thyroid gland secretes thyroid hormones that control the speed of the body’s metabolic rate.

To produce thyroid hormones, the thyroid gland needs iodine, an element contained in an ideal form in kelp. The thyroid gland traps iodine and processes it into thyroid hormones. As thyroid hormones are used up, some of the iodine contained in the hormones returns to the thyroid gland, where some is lost and the rest is recycled to produce more thyroid hormones.

As the thyroid stimulates energy production of the cellular mitochondria, it influences all body functions. Nerve health, bone formation, reproduction, the mineral condition of the skin, hair, nails, and teeth, as well as our speech and mental state are all influenced by the thyroid.

Iodine is an extremely important and essential mineral and one of the best things you can put into your body, as your body is most likely craving it.  American iodine expert, Dr. David Brownstein, MD, author of Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It, writes that his clinic in Michigan has tested around 5,000 patients and found 96% to be iodine deficient. Thus, statistically, it is likely that you are deficient in iodine and can immensely benefit from adding it to your daily regimen.

The World Health Organization says that iodine deficiency is the largest single cause of mental retardation and preventable brain damage. Iodine deficiency has been reported to produce typical reductions of 10 to 15 IQ points. An iodine deficiency is also a serious cause of physical, neurological, mental, immune, and reproductive disease, and is a major cause of the obesity and underactive thyroid epidemics in the United States and Canada. Adding iodine alone to our daily diets can result in a dramatic improvement in our overall health and levels of energy. It is evident, then, that iodine is an irreplaceable nutrient.

Every single cell in our bodies needs iodine to function properly, and most diets do not have enough iodine in them. Furthermore, the consumption of iodized salt, apart from being potentially toxic and harmful to the body, has been shown to be not enough to reverse or prevent an iodine deficiency, nor is eating fish.

The highest natural source of iodine is kelp, which is an extremely nutritious seaweed and another important Superman food. However, taking kelp alone won’t supply us with all the iodine we need to reverse a lifelong deficiency. Besides, living in this world, we are exposed to dangerously high levels of toxicity in the atmosphere and in our foods, which makes it necessary for us to take higher amounts of iodine to counteract all that toxicity and detoxify our body from all the toxins that we are being bombarded with on a regular basis. Also, most people have been deficient in iodine for their whole lives and it takes a very potent, high quality natural iodine supplement from kelp to reverse such a deficiency as quickly as possible. It is possible to get iodine from sea vegetables such as kelp, however the iodine in sea vegetables may not be enough to supply therapeutic doses of iodine and a liquid extract is usually the way to go in the beginning. So, it is crucial to have a high quality iodine supplement, at least in the beginning of their transition to The Superman Diet.
Many people who take iodine report that they have a greater sense of well-being, increased energy, and a lifting of brain fog. They feel warmer in colder environments, need somewhat less sleep, enjoy improved skin complexion, and have more regular bowel movements.

Humans require iodine for the production of thyroid hormones that regulate the metabolic energy of the body and set the basal metabolic rate (BMR). Iodine is well absorbed from the stomach into the blood. About 30 percent goes to the thyroid gland, depending on the need. Iodine is eliminated rapidly. Most of the remaining 70 percent is utilized by the immune system. What remains is filtered by the kidneys into the urine. Our bodies do not conserve iodine as they do iron, and we must obtain it regularly from the diet.

Other benefits of iodine include:

  • Increased Energy & Stamina
  • Improved Immune System Function
  • Improved Thyroid & Endocrine Function
  • Clearer Thinking & Elimination of Brain Fog
  • Lower Cholesterol / Triglycerides
  • Improves Insulin Sensitivity / Regulates Blood Sugar
  • Improved Sweating Mechanism for Detox
  • Improved Digestion
  • Improved Bowel Function
  • Improved Urinary Excretions
  • Improved Breast Milk Quantity and Quality
  • Reduced Body Odors (vaginal, foot, underarm, etc.)
  • Broad Spectrum Antiseptic / Antibiotic / Anti-parasitic
  • Eliminated common parasitic infections like ringworm, toenail fungus, etc.
  • Radiation Protection when thyroid receptors are fully loaded

I recommend that you read Dr. Brownstein’s book Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It to learn more about how you can, just by taking iodine, dramatically improve your health and quality of life.

There are several poor quality iodine products out there. We need to take the right form of iodine, which has a negative charge and is called paramagnetic iodine.
